ATC services

Air traffic control services (ATC services) are services provided by air traffic controllers for the purpose of safe, orderly, and efficient air traffic. Based on air-ground telecommunication networking system, air traffic controllers transmit information and instruction by radar, automation system equipment, and radio communication during every phase of flight. ATC services include aerodrome control service, approach control service, and area control service.

Aerodrome control service

Aerodrome control service

Aerodrome control service units are located within control towers of an aerodrome. Tower controllers manage and visually monitor traffic within or in the vicinity of the aerodromes’ controlled airspace. The service is provided by radio communication to guide aircrafts during take-off, landing and taxi.

Associated controlled towers of ANWS are located in the international airports at Taoyuan, Songshan, and Kaohsiung, and also in the domestic airports at Fongnian, Kinmen, Penghu, Hengchun, Beigan, Nangan, Ludao and Lanyu.

Approach control service are provided by “approach control tower” units.

Approach control service

Approach control service are provided by terminal control units.

Radar controllers at these units manage flights departing from or arriving at one or more aerodromes. Controllers must safely create proper separation between aircrafts during their descending or climbing phase within limited controlled airspace in the vicinity of the aerodromes. Unlike tower controllers, who monitor aerodrome traffic visually, approach controllers use radar surveillance system and radio communication to monitor the position and the altitude of each aircraft in order to navigate the flights.

There are two approach control tower units of ANWS: Taipei Approach Control Tower and Kaohsiung Approach Control Tower, which are located in the North and South Air Traffic Service Parks of ANWS at Taoyuan and Kaohsiung, respectively.

The area control service in Taipei FIR is provided by Taipei Area Control Center (TACC)

Area control service

Area control service is provided by area control center (ACC), which is established to provide service to controlled flights including departure, arrival and transit flights above 20,000 feet within the Taipei Flight Information Region (Taipei FIR). When flights travel across the boundaries of Taipei FIR and its adjacent FIRs, ACC controllers will exchange jurisdiction by hand-off to seamlessly continue providing the radar service for the flights. ACC controllers also use radar surveillance system and radio communication to monitor the position and the altitude of each aircraft as approach controllers do.

The area control service in Taipei FIR is provided by Taipei Area Control Center (TACC), located in the North Air Traffic Service Park of ANWS at Taoyuan.
